Advantages of owning a medium-sized marine aquarium

Medium-sized marine aquariums, such as the AQUAEL Glossy Marine, are the perfect choice for beginner aquarists who want to embark on a saltwater adventure. Their compact size allows them to be placed in areas with limited space, while also providing an aesthetic decorative element that brings the beauty of the underwater world into your home. The open aquarium facilitates maintenance and arrangement, while the advanced and complete filtration system minimizes the risk of errors, supporting the health of corals, anemones, and fish. The Glossy Marine set can also be chosen by experienced aquarists who would like to set up a more compact tank.

Advanced filtration system in a marine aquarium

Filtration in a marine aquarium consists of several stages. Glossy Marine comes with a complete system with devices that keep the water clean. The purified water passes through 5 chambers:

First chamber – comb and cone filter: The water flows through an opening covered with a ribbed cover (comb), which in the first stage retains larger impurities (e.g., food residues, sediments). The water then flows into a special filter (a so-called “sock”) made of durable nylon material. Here, fine particles are thoroughly filtered out mechanically.

Second overflow chamber – space for additional components: The next chamber remains empty – this is where you can install an optional heater to ensure stable temperature or additional electronic components for control, e.g., a pH probe or thermostat.

Aquael advice

Marine aquariums are sensitive to temperature fluctuations and overheating, so heaters should be used with caution. If you decide to add one, we recommend purchasing the Ultra Heater Day&Night or Platinum heater from Aquael, which maintain a precise and constant temperature.

Third chamber – protein skimmer: The Glossy Marine set includes a professional protein skimmer, which is essential in a marine aquarium. The device draws in water and air and mixes them together in a reaction chamber. This creates a thick foam to which organic impurities attach themselves. The foam is then pushed into a special cup located at the top of the device, where the impurities are collected and removed from the aquarium. This mechanism prevents the formation of harmful compounds and keeps the water clean.

Chamber four – baskets for loose media: Contains four baskets with space for loose media – ceramic or chemical. The starter kit includes BioCeraMAX 600 ceramic, which purifies the water and is also a habitat for beneficial nitrifying bacteria. The filter media can be freely replaced with others, e.g. ZeoMAX Plus, PhosMAX or Carbomax, depending on the needs of the aquarium.

Fifth chamber – circulator in the retention chamber: The circulator is placed on the bottom on a base with four strong suction cups. Its task is to move the water and pump it back into the aquarium. The purified water from this chamber is pumped upwards through a flexible tube and then returns to the circulation system through a ball valve with a flat end. The outlet allows you to adjust the direction and range of the flow, which ensures even water movement throughout the aquarium, which is crucial for anemones and corals. The tube has a wide outlet end, ensuring a gentle water flow. If necessary, the tube can be shortened or additional elements can be added (optional).

The retention chamber is equipped with a functional scale. The volume is given in liters and gallons, making the scale universal for users of different metric systems.

The filter chambers (except for the chamber with the skimmer) have covers with round openings for easy access during maintenance. The covers protect against unnecessary contamination and improve the aesthetics of the tank. Safety valves prevent water from spilling out if the chambers become blocked, ensuring safe water circulation.

Protein skimmer – the heart of filtration in a marine tank

A protein skimmer is a key piece of equipment in a marine aquarium, removing organic contaminants such as food residues, fish waste, and other substances before they begin to decompose and negatively affect water quality. Its mechanism involves mixing water with air using a needle wheel. This process produces a thick foam to which all protein contaminants adhere. The contaminants and foam are then pushed into a special container located at the top of the skimmer. Thanks to the skimmer, protein deposits are removed before they start to decompose, preventing the formation of harmful compounds and keeping the water clean.

The skimmer is attached to a strong magnet, which allows it to be conveniently and precisely positioned at the correct height.

Safe glass with Safe Tank technology

The front and side windows of the tank are made of Opti glass. This glass has undergone a de-ironization process, eliminating the greenish tint and ensuring crystal clarity and high light transmission. Polished edges provide an aesthetic finish. The elegance of the tank is emphasized by a black frame and careful bonding with black silicone.

The proprietary Safe Tank technology, developed by Aquael, is based on laminating two glass panels with an ultra-thin, transparent film. This prevents immediate water leakage in the event of glass breakage. In the event of damage, the glass forms a characteristic “spider web” but remains sealed, allowing time for the aquarium inhabitants to be safely removed. Importantly, Safe Tank technology does not affect the transparency of the glass. You can enjoy perfect clarity and vivid colors of the interior arrangement.

Dedicated Glossy Marine cabinet

Note: The cabinet is not included in the set and must be purchased separately.

A dedicated Glossy Marine cabinet has been created for the set, which provides an elegant finish and practical storage space for accessories.

The Glossy Marine cabinet is perfectly matched to the dimensions of the aquarium (60×58.5 cm) with a height of 87 cm, which allows for convenient servicing of the tank and its proper display. Made of glossy MDF boards covered with acrylic, it has a single door flush with the front glass of the aquarium, ensuring a harmonious and elegant look. Adjustable legs allow for precise leveling, and the interior of the cabinet provides space for accessories and technical equipment. The high-quality black finish emphasizes the modern design, making the set a central decorative element of the room.

Lighting for marine aquariums

The correct spectrum and intensity of light are very important for a marine aquarium. The right light affects the development, condition, and health of marine organisms, as well as the aesthetics of the tank and the colors of corals and fish. The Glossy Marine set allows you to choose any lamp dedicated to saltwater aquariums.

Aquael tip:

We recommend supplementing the set with the 60 W Ultraslim BT 60 lamp from the Aquael range. The lamp should be used with the Marine spectrum, which is ideal for marine aquariums. It is worth using the Day&Night mode, which imitates the natural daily cycle in water tanks.

Application and benefits

AQUAEL Glossy Marine is the perfect choice for beginner marine aquarists, offering a compact size, advanced filtration, and safety thanks to Safe Tank technology. The aquarium is 50 cm high, ensuring optimal lighting placement so that anemones and corals are properly illuminated. An adjustable circulator provides adequate wave action, supporting the health of marine organisms. The kit is easy to use, and the modular filter panel allows you to customize the media to the specific needs of your aquarium.
